Buying blog placements and using a product placement service

There's a brand new wrinkle in blog PR that bears examination. Rather than begging for placements, you purchase them. That's right, product placement for blogs is now a reality.

There are several companies out there that offer blog product placement. That is, they take your products or services, as well as your money, and offer them as much as their networks of bloggers. These bloggers choose to mention said products and in return get paid for it.

Blog product placement may also be handled directly. You or your PR firm identifies and contacts key blogs and then make direct offers for many sort of product placement. Maybe it's a cash deal, you may just send them a totally free copy of anything you're selling. In return, the blogger gives you a plug.

Possibly the easiest way to pursue this is to sign up having a product placement network. They register a large number of independent bloggers and then try to match advertisers with the appropriate blogs. Any blogger who writes in regards to a given advertiser gets paid a small amount, typically in the 5-10 Dollar range.

With one of these networks, bloggers are under no obligation to mention any given product; they only get paid for what they are doing blog about. They're also not obliged to write positively in regards to a given product, but you can imagine that they probably will otherwise, they won't last long in the network. The upside of these networks is you can get a lot of blogs written about your company or products.

However that a lot of these blogs are nothing more than advertising mills; they don't have a lot of regular followers and exist primarily to write shill posts.

Even those legit sites in a network may have nothing to do with your industry or have cachet among your customers. Do you receive any take advantage of some random site mentioning your product? Perhaps a little, but not as much while you would from the well-known and relevant site doing the same.

For these reasons, you might not want to invest too heavily in these "blogvertising" networks, at least until you try them out a little. They are doing make things relatively easy for you, however. Which are these pay-for-play networks? Here's a short list:

How much to those services cost? It varies somewhat from plan to service, but expect to pay at least $10 per placement. The number of placements you pay for is negotiable.
