A casino craps crew is usually composed of two standing Dealers, another Dealer called the stickperson, and a replacement Dealer, as well as one or two boxpersons. The stickperson stands in the middle of the craps table, pushing the dice around the table to the shooters. The boxperson is the casino executive in charge of overseeing the craps table.
Dealers usually work for 40 minutes and then go on break and are replaced by another Dealer. The Dealers at the craps table generally rotate positions in a counterclockwise direction looking down at the table. In this manner, every Casino Craps Dealer at the table handles the position of the base Dealer as well as the position of stickperson.
Dealers stand during play. As a rule, they are expected to wear uniforms. The two standing Craps Dealers are each located at the base of one side or the other of the table. Each Dealer is responsible for the players in his or her section of the craps table. Individuals have a number of responsibilities. They are responsible for changing a player’s cash into chips. This is done by giving the money to the boxperson. The Dealer may also change a player’s chips during the course of play to those worth either a higher or lower denomination. The shooter must choose two dice from a choice of four to eight that are offered. The Stickperson must then put the nonselected dice back in a box that is kept in view in front of the individual at all times. Another responsibility of the Stickperson is to “call the game.” This happens when the Stickperson announces what each roll of the dice is as well as whether it is a winner or loser. Every Stickperson has his or her own way of calling a game, so that enthusiasm and excitement are generated at the table at all times—when the shooter is shaking the dice, when the dice have been rolled, and when the winning or losing bets are announced.
The Stickperson takes or books the proposition bets placed in the center of the craps table. The individual must verbally acknowledge every proposition wager. This is sometimes called advertising the bets. He or she will then point out the customers who win the standing dealers and announce the correct payoff for each person.
Standing Dealers are responsible for handling all the place bets as well as keeping track of them. This must be done in the proper order so that the right players are paid correctly if their numbers come up again.
Dealers are expected to move a plastic disk to a corner box number after a point has been established on the come-out roll of a shooter. This disk is called a buck. It indicates that the number in which the disk has been placed is the point. The disk may have a black and a white side. The white side of the buck in a box number indicates that number is the point.
Sometimes when a new shooter is coming out, the Dealer will move the disk to the “don’t come” box. If the disk is black and in the “don’t come” box, it indicates that no point has been established and the roll is a come-out roll.
The Dealer is responsible for placing even bets and odd bets in the correct box when “come” or “don’t come” bets have been made. Winning bets are then paid off. Chips for losing bets are taken off and given back to the casino. Other duties of the standing Dealer may include:
Tips may also be referred to as tokes. Players who win often tip the Dealer, pushing their hourly wage in some cases to $50 or more. Some Dealers working at tables with high limits may earn $100 to $500 or more per hour in tips. Individuals may earn between $30,000 to $110,000 annually, or more with tips.
Opportunities for dealers may be located in any casino hosting craps tables. As casinos are often open 24 hours a day, people may work various shifts. While people may find employment in any casino in the world, the greatest number of opportunities exist in areas where there are a large number of casinos.
A Casino Craps Dealer may take a number of different paths to career advancement. The individual can advance his or her career by obtaining more experience and finding a similar position in a larger or more prestigious casino, resulting in increased tips. Some Casino Craps Dealers also obtain training and experience in dealing additional casino games. Individuals may also move on to management positions within the casino, including floorperson or boxperson.
A Casino Craps Dealer must have complete working knowledge of both the casino rules and the procedures of the game of craps. According to many experts, craps is one of the most difficult casino games to work at as a Dealer. Individuals in this position should be trained in dealing craps at an accredited gaming school, academy, or institute. Community colleges, vocational technical schools, and casinos themselves also offer Dealer training.
Casino Craps Dealers, like all others working in a gaming area, must be licensed in the state in which they work. There are also minimum age requirements. Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits Individuals should be personable people who enjoy being around others. Showmanship is helpful. An enthusiastic patter is essential. Math skills are also needed, as is manual dexterity.
Casino Craps Dealers do not usually belong to a union. Individuals interested in learning more about careers in this area should contact gaming institutes, academies, and schools, as well as casino human resources departments.
