Choose the right haircut for the shape of your face

Round face

Although you might sometimes feel as if you have a pumpkin on your head, take heart - those rounded, babyish cheeks are going to serve you well in your old age.

In the meantime, look for cuts with volume on top, very long, sideswept bangs, or graduated layers. Avoid short, blunt cuts that will only serve as a picture-frame to your roundness.

Oval face

Consider yourself blessed. Girls with oval-shaped faces can pull off just about every hairstyle under the sun. Not for nothing does almost every top model have an ovalshaped face. Garrison recommends a shag with angled bangs.

Heart-shaped face

To minimize your cute chin, avoid tooshort styles, and instead go for longer layers, a shoulder-length bob, or long-sideswept bangs.

Square face

Your wonderfully angular jaw gives you an edge in the bone-structure sweepstakes, but also means that you need to look for softening cuts to downplay it. Think either long and overly feminine, with angles past the chin, or short and textured. Avoid anything too geometric, like face-framing bangs or blunt-cut bobs.

Long face

Extremely long or extremely short cuts are often not the most flattering, as these can make your face appear even longer. Instead, look for ways to create the illusion of width, such as with bangs, a chin-length bob, or long layers. Avoid too much height at the crown when creating up-dos.
