Compliance Managers deal with a diverse set of matters, ranging from the environment to licensing to workers' rights. They examine, evaluate, and investigate their company's conformity with laws and regulations governing contract compliance of licenses and permits and other compliance and enforcement inspection activities, particularly those pertaining to health, safety, and environmental concerns. Most oil and natural gas companies' safety plans correspond to three easily identified risk areas: office, shop, and field. While safety plans for office and shop environments are fairly standard, safety procedures related to oil and gas fieldwork are more specialized.
Compliance Managers examine all permits, licenses, applications and records of the company for which they work to ensure full compliance with all industry and governmental licensing requirements. They may interview employees to determine the nature of any suspected violations of regulations and to obtain evidence of any breach. They monitor follow-up actions in cases where violations were found and review all compliance monitoring reports. Working with environmental technicians and specialists, they perform laboratory and field tests to monitor a company's environment and investigate sources of pollution that may affect health and are clearly against regulations. Relying on their training and experience, they educate employees on safety and health requirements, regulations, rules, practices, and proper safety procedures specific to their job requirements to ensure compliance.
Compliance Managers undertake internal audits, walkthroughs, and reviews, keeping careful records. Some records are about their inspection results, while others document information, such as test or survey results. They prepare written, oral, tabular, and graphic reports summarizing requirements and regulations, including enforcement and chain of responsibility documentation. They enforce the use of safety equipment, identify potential causes for accidents, watch for noncompliance on the part of employees, and recommend changes in policies and procedures to prevent accidents and illness.
They usually assist top management in preparation of safety and health budgets. Throughout, they must be adept at using software specifically designed to maintain records and the tracking of the disparate regulations, compliance permits, and policies, which makes their jobs of gathering and checking data or tracking multiple compliance reporting deadlines that much easier.
Salary studies conducted by PayScale, Inc. found that the median annual salaries for environmental, health, and safety Compliance Managers ranged from US Dollars 35,339 (starting salary) to over US Dollars 60,000 for managers with 20 or more years of experience. Those managers with one to four years of experience had a median yearly income of US Dollars 36,400, whereas those with five to nine years of experience earned US Dollars 45,000 or more.
