Consider your name on Twitter very carefully

As you're evolving your vision of how you'll use Twitter in your business and what it is you'll tweet, you're ready to pause and consider who you will be at Twitter. This is the time to carefully consider your chosen name on Twitter. Will yours be associated with your business, engaging to your followers, and memorable to all who will eagerly - and hopefully easily - remember you by your Twitter name? Selecting your Twitter user name is an extremely important step, but it's fun, too.

You'll likely hear your Twitter name referred to as a "handle" - just like the high-riding, horn-blowing truckers who have chatted backwards and forwards over their CB radios using handles like Rubberduck and Pig Pen. Your Twitter handle becomes the way in which your followers can get in touch along with you, track your tweets, and interact with you (or your business).

For that reason, you want a handle or name that is simple to remember and reflects who you are and what it is that you need to do. If you're in the business of selling rubber ducks, for example, then Rubberduck is a preferred name. If someone else has already taken the name you would like consider an alternate name that conveys the same idea but also differentiates you from others, such as Retrorubberduck or Weboduckies.

You will probably need to brainstorm numerous names, determining which on your listing of good names would best represent what it's you hope to achieve on Twitter. Consider each name for a day or two and see which ones seem to stick in your mind the very best.

Choosing a name can be agonizing to some people, fearful from the fallout should they choose a "bad" one. Here's a list of considerations while you work to select a perfect Twitter handle:

Your Twitter name is your microblogging calling card, so devise and decide upon a name that's as functional to your purpose as it is fun for you and your followers. Whether it makes sense, is easy to consider and type, and it is relevant to your intentions at Twitter, yours is a handle that helps bolster your business.
