Create a sacred space where you can reflect on your life

Writing a new life story begins by reflecting on your life in the past, and continues by opening yourself up to the future. To do this means connecting to your inner voice and allowing it to teach you about your history and guide you toward your true destiny. Making sense of your life story is a very private process and a very internal process.

It isn't something you want to do while you're watching television, while you're sitting in rush hour traffic, or when you're in a room full of people. To facilitate your process, the first thing you need to do is to establish a very special and sacred place where you can dedicate your time, energy, and focus to you. This is your sacred space.

We all need a sacred space, a quiet, private place to be alone with our thoughts and our feelings; a place where we are free from disruptions, interruptions, external challenges, and internal demands. How many times have you thought "If only I could have a few minutes alone," or "If only I could hear myself think," or "If only I could take care of myself as well as I take care of so many other people in my life." Well, creating a sacred space is the first step toward making all of these wishes come true.

Your sacred space is any private little spot you can call your own. Now is the time to start thinking how you might create such a space for yourself. Is there any room in your house where you could sit and meditate and have complete privacy whenever you need it? Is there a place in your garden? Your sacred space could be a room, a portion of a room, a table, a shelf, or any space that you can claim as your own.

Your space needs to be a place where you won't be disturbed by nosy neighbors, barking dogs, or ringing telephones. If there is a phone in your space, either take it out or turn the ringer off and let your answering machine take your calls. If you live with others, maybe you can put a screen around your sacred space, or maybe you just need to make it clear that when you are in your space you shouldn't be disturbed.

For those of us who grew up in households where no space was ever our own, the idea of creating a separate, quiet space may seem very radical, if not absolutely strange. Believe me, you will get used to it very quickly; it probably won't be long before you are wondering how you have lived for so long without a sacred space. Are you worried about making your loved ones feel excluded? Then you need to tell yourself that no matter how much love you have for the many people in your life, there are times when you need to be able to separate from them, even if it is only for a short while.

Give yourself the opportunity to make a heartfelt connection with your inner self. This connection will not diminish your capacity to give to others. On the contrary, it will strengthen it. Having a sacred space for yourself is an incredibly loving act.
