To create a bookmark, first open Safari and head to the web page that you want to add to your bookmarks. Click Bookmarks > Add Bookmark and you will be prompted to name the page that you want to save. Not all web pages have descriptive titles, so make sure that you use a name that will remind you of what is on that specific site or page.
After you give the page a name, you can choose where you want to save it in your Bookmarks folders. Access your bookmark by clicking Bookmarks and selecting it from the folder or group that you saved it in.
If you do a lot of web surfing, over time you might accumulate dozens or hundreds of bookmarks. Searching through them all to find the one site that you want doesn’t sound very efficient, does it? Well, you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble if you start organizing your bookmarks from the start. Click the Bookmarks icon in the Bookmarks toolbar to see all of your bookmarks to date.
Just like with your documents or music, you can create folders and subfolders to store your bookmarks in. Apple has provided some preset folders for you, but you can customize them or create new ones as you see fit. You may have a folder for news websites, one for recipes you’ve found online, one for your favorite shopping websites, and perhaps a folder for websites relating to a favorite hobby or pastime. Use the + button at the bottom of the page to create new collections or subfolders.
In the Bookmarks Bar window, your bookmarks are listed by name and the web address appears under Address. You can move bookmarks by dragging them to new folders or collections.
If you want to keep a copy of the link in the original folder, hold down the option key when you are dragging and dropping it. To delete a bookmark, subfolder, or collection, select it with your mouse and press the delete key. Quickly add a site to your bookmarks by selecting the address in the address bar and dragging and dropping it onto the Bookmarks toolbar.
You can easily accumulate dozens or hundreds of bookmarks over the lifespan of your computer. If you lose your bookmarks, it could take a long time to find all the websites again and re-add them to Safari. Luckily, you can back up your bookmarks and then import them to a new computer or browser.
To export your bookmarks, click File > Export Bookmarks and give your file a name. Select a location on your hard drive where you want to save them, and click Save. Using a date in the filename, like November_2010, will help you keep track of which bookmark file is the most recent.
To import bookmarks into Safari, click File > Import Bookmarks, browse for your file on your computer, and then click Import. You can use this feature to import bookmarks from friends and family to your new computer or to share your bookmarks with them!
