Daily aerobic exercise helps you lose weight and fight depression

Are you depressed? If you are really seriously depressed, look for professional help. If more mildly depressed, the very best treatment is daily moderate aerobic exercise.

A walking program works as well as medications, and the scientific studies are pretty consistent on that point. Being active is mood-enhancing, so you'll treat your mind and body in one fell swoop. Call individuals who make you laugh and email people you like. Seek out friends and helpful support Take a mental health day from work and responsibilities, although not to sit down home and brood. Instead, make a move positive and uplifting with your day off.

Go to the park and ride the swings. Walk in nature. Play, laugh, sing, and force yourself to get out of your depressed safe place. Recognize that your mood is down and make a deliberate effort to alter it with positive activity. Read about depression on university Web sites and methods to recognize if it's serious enough to warrant professional intervention.

Depression causes many people to consume more, but people attempting to lose weight who are depressed overeat probably the most calories. If you think you're overeating, do the following:

1. When you are about to eat, ask yourself, "Am I truly hungry? " If yes, go ahead and eat.

2. If not, consider why you feel the need to consume; pin down the emotional triggers.

3. If you have determined the underlying cause, act on the triggers, and ignore the urge to consume. Find another constructive outlet that isn't taking in calories. Remind yourself that you are in control of your behavior and that you have the chance to break old habits, regardless of how ingrained.

4. "Groove" the habit of smoking by practicing steps 1-3 each time you are about to eat before process becomes automatic. Your goal is to consume only from hunger.

If you avoid coping with what's troubling you or use escapism as your form of dealing with difficult problems, you are more likely to overeat and put on weight. People with escapist and avoidance tendencies also often abusive drinking as well as other addictive behaviors. Oversleeping, excess television watching, and other alike behaviors are often used to numb emotions when someone is unwilling to confront problems.

Many people use food as an addiction. Food becomes another destructive way to soothe the hurting soul. Dr. Mark Gold at the University of Florida has stated that he believes hedonistic overeating is an addictive disease and requires to be treated the same as other addictions. His research shows that, in obese people, beef broth does nothing for brain chemicals, but Kobe beef illuminates functional brain scans as though an addictive drug were being given.

Receptors illuminate in PET brain scans as they do in cocaine and alcohol abusers. When overeaters are shown a photograph from the Golden Arches, their brain brightens just like a fireworks display at Disney World. Interestingly, the portion of the mind dedicated to the sensations of texture, taste, and feel from the mouth and tongue is also enlarged in overeaters, thereby reinforcing the sensual pleasures of food.

If you think you are suffering emotionally, get help. People with real psychological problems that need treatment lost only half the load of those without emotional problems in the same weight-loss study. Don't focus just on your weight. You need physical and mental strength and healing to attain your weight reduction goals.

Overeating isn't always a negative. Sometimes we are feeling emotions that we do not want to admit, even to ourselves. If you are grabbing food and aren't hungry, use that behavior to investigate what is troubling you. Let it be a positive signal, as if you come with an early warning system for your emotions. Then act in it before they overwhelm you or lead you into crisis.
