Detect computer viruses before they attack your system

Tips On Catching Viruses Before They Infect Your Computer

Make sure you have file extension viewing enabled. For most Windows programs, go to the Windows Explorer program, then click "View," then "Options" and, depending which program you have, either uncheck the box for "Hide file extensions for known file types" or check the box.

In Windows 2000, users will find the settings under the "Tools" menu, then click "Folder Option," click on the "File Types" tab and then select whichever programs you want to see the extension on and click the "Advanced button." Then check the box "Always Show Extension." In Windows XP, users will find the settings under the Tools menu, then select "Folder Options" and "View," and uncheck "Hide Extensions for known file types."

Before you open that attachment, cross-reference it in the Infected Attachments list to see if it is related to a virus. This site has details on all the viruses, and most important, the file extensions associated with these viruses.

Another excellent source for details on viruses and the most likely place to find a quick fix for a virus can be found at CERT, the Carnegie-Mellon University Software Engineering School's CERT.

These three sites AVG, McAfee, and Symantec (owners of Norton Anti-virus) all offer anti-virus information and products on their websites. Remember: they are trying to sell you their products.
