You can publish your photos and movies to your MobileMe gallery, but that’s not all you can do. You can also allow your friends and family to upload their own photos to your albums and to download their favorites of your photos.
Now when people visit your gallery online, Upload and Download buttons will be active if you’ve enabled these options; otherwise, the buttons appear but are grayed out. Visitors can select a photo and click Download to transfer the file to their own computer, or they can click the Upload button and add their own photos to your album.
If you’ve ever tried to send a large computer file via e-mail, you probably already know what a hassle it can be. Slow upload times and limits on file sizes and types can make it a Herculean task even when using compression software. To avoid these issues, you can use MobileMe iDisk to share your large files.
Once you’ve clicked Share, an e-mail will be sent to the people you’ve selected with a link so that they can download the file.
One really cool thing that you can use MobileMe for is to find a lost iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone. Click the Find My iPhone button in the MobileMe toolbar and you’ll be taken to the location page. You must register your device and make sure that it is running the appropriate software before this service will work.
Once you’ve registered your device, as long as your iPhone (or iPad/iPod touch) is on, you will be able to track its location on the map. You also have the ability to send a message to your iPhone that will appear on the main screen or to play a tone, even if the iPhone is in silent mode.
If you’ve simply misplaced your iPhone or left it somewhere where it can be retrieved, you can remotely place a lock on the iPhone so that no one will be able to use it until you return for it. Perhaps most importantly, if you believe you will not be able to recover your iPhone (if you know it’s been stolen, for example), MobileMe gives you the means to perform a remote wipe of the system.
This wipe will remove all of your data, personal settings, and personal information from your iPhone or iPad and restore it to factory settings. It will not, however, affect your wireless service.
