Within Windows 7, you can change the sounds associated to different events. You can change your background image. You can change the colors associated with your windows. You can change the color, size, and style of font. Once you have all the settings the way you want, you can then save them as a group. This group is a theme. You can create multiple themes that have different settings. This allows you to customize the look and feel of your copy of Windows 7. The following steps walk you through the process of creating and saving a theme: 1. Customize your Windows appearance to how you want it to be in your theme. Some of the customizations are as follows:
2. Select Control Panel from the Start menu.
3. Select the Appearance and Themes category. The Windows 7 Appearance and Themes dialog window appears.
4. Make any additional changes to your Windows 7 settings by selecting the various tasks and options on the Appearance and Themes dialog window.
5. Select Change the Computer’s Theme from the list of tasks. This presents the Display Properties dialog window with the Theme tab selected.
6. Click the Save As button. The standard Save As dialog from Windows 7 appears. Notice that the file type (Save as Type value) is defaulted to Theme.

The taskbar is the area at the bottom of your screen. It includes the Start button, a Quick Launch area, links to the currently running programs, and the system tray. It can also include the date and time. The items actually shown on the taskbar of Windows 7 and how the taskbar displays them can be changed. You learn how to customize the taskbar to make it more useful to you.
1. Right-click in any area of the taskbar that is empty.
2. Select Properties from the Windows 7 menu. The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog window appears. The Taskbar tab should be selected.

The taskbar contains a number of areas; however, the most useful area to customize is the Quick Launch toolbar area. Within the Quick Launch area you can place icons for programs that you use on a regular basis. Once an icon is on the toolbar, you only have to left-click it once to launch the application.
The following steps walk you through the various customizations available for the Quick Launch bar:
1. Activate the Quick Launch bar.
2. Resize the Quick Launch bar. You can change the width of the Quick Launch bar by left-clicking and dragging the resize area that is on the right side of the displayed icons. Your mouse pointer changes to a resize cursor when you are over the bar. The pointer changes to an insert cursor when you are actually resizing the area.
3. Move the location of the Quick Launch toolbar in the taskbar. You can move the Quick Launch toolbar using the resize bar to the left of its icons. Left-click on this resize bar and drag to the left or right. The Quick Launch toolbar moves as you drag it. You can’t move it before the Start button on the left or past the notification area on the right. You may need to resize the toolbar after you move it.
4. Change the order of the Quick Launch icons. You can change the order by simply left-clicking and dragging the icon to the new location on the toolbar.
5. Remove icons from the Quick Launch toolbar that you are no longer using. To remove an icon, right-click on the icon and then select Delete from the pop-up menu. A prompt is displayed asking you to confirm that you want to perform the deletion.
6. Add additional icons to the Quick Launch toolbar. The easiest way to add an icon is to drag it from another location and drop it onto the toolbar. You can right-click and drag an icon from the Start menu, from the desktop, or from a folder. When you drag the icon over the Quick Launch toolbar, you will see an indicator showing where the icon will be placed. When you drop the item, you are asked to either copy, save, or create a shortcut. Choose to copy or create a shortcut. If in doubt, create a shortcut.
7. Change the display format of the items in the Quick Launch bar. You can change the size of the icons or change the text that is displayed by right-clicking on a blank portion of the Quick Launch bar. You can then select the following items to make the changes. Figure 48-5 shows the impact of changing the Quick Launch bar to use large icons and show text.
