To keep your hair from matting up at night while you sleep, it needs to be protected by putting it in several buns if it's shorter or one bun if it's longer. If you're a restless sleeper, a big braid or two is more secure. Putting your hair into either buns or braids at night is also a great way to help relax your curls if you want your hair to hang longer. Because the ends of your hair are snarl-prone, you can finish off the last couple of inches in a twist: braid your hair all the way down to the last two inches from the end.
Then take the three sections of the braid and combine the two smallest sections together. As you do so, give the combined segments a twist to help meld them into one piece. Then wrap them around each other in a two-strand twist down to the end. To protect these fragile ends from rubbing against your pillow, you can loop them up and tuck them back into the braid.
When you unbraid your hair in the morning, keep in mind that this activity involves the ends, a notorious tangling zone. All of your tightest spirals will most likely be here, waiting to wrap themselves inextricably together. To prevent this from happening, here are a couple tips for undoing your night braid in the morning.
First, it's best to take a nickel-size dollop of hair conditioner, add a little water to it, and smooth this over the ends of your braid. Spirals are at their tightest when completely dry. This step will keep the ends slippery and a bit looser to prep your ends for being undone. Think of it as almost like giving them a little sleeping pill before you load them into their carrier for the trip to the vet. Left on their own, your curl ends get confused and will grab at one another in a panic. With your soothing guidance, you'll prevent them from tangling.
Before you begin to unbraid, hold the very tip of your braid. Open up the twist near where it meets the braid, then gently run your finger down to the end. Continue to hold the braid's tip in your other hand. When you've untwisted as far as you can, it's now safe to let the tip finish untwisting the rest of the way in your other hand. Open up your fingers a little to let the tip untwirl under your guidance, like a curly top. If your ends tend to be very tangly, instead of releasing them to let them twirl open in your fingers, you can untwist them manually. Turn them with your fingers in the direction they want to untwist.
Morning used to be a stressful time for me back when I was using chemicals. It once seemed that no matter how I set my hair at night, come morning, it was stiff and I couldn't find a way to style it. The ends fanned open at broken angles, and every day was a challenge to find a way to hide as much of my hair as possible. Now that my hair is natural, it takes me only a few seconds to do my hair, and I don't have to give it much thought at all. I make sure my coiled ends show every day, because I'm so happy to have them. It amazes me what a difference learning to love my hair for what it is has made in my life.
