Think of a time when you were at peace with yourself - when you were truly at peace with both your body and your mind. A time when all things were working in harmony and you didn't strain to find energy. Your mind was clear and alert.
Think back to a time when you didn't worry about how your body looked and your mind was calm. Maybe it was when you were a kid. Maybe it was that summer when you toured the country. Maybe it was that day when you just couldn't stop smiling.
That kind of clarity, that place of peace, is actually your natural state of being. And it comes from being well nourished both in body and mind. We've been talking about how to use food as fuel and how to harness the various ways of fine-tuning your body mechanics. The key to any weight-loss plan is mastery over nutrition and how you use food to get your body going. But an equally important force in the success of any weight-loss or life plan is the mind. What goes into it and certainly what comes out of it are the catalyst for everything. What many people (and many weightloss plans, for that matter) tend to forget is that the mind plays a crucial role in shaping the body. Even if you do everything to make your body a welloiled machine, it truly won't go anywhere without its driver - the mind.
The nutrisystem diet acknowledges this important fact. It takes into account not only what's going on physically inside your body but also what's going on inside your head, and how your mindset and lifestyle patterns affect your weight-loss efforts. This is a crucial element to the weight-loss process. The mind matters. I'm going to ask you to take a mental inventory of your thoughts and your thinking patterns.
I'm also going to ask you to notice what's surrounding you in your life. Even if you don't realize it, much of what you think about is coming or growing directly out of what's around you. Have you ever spent time with a friend who is a downer? How do you feel after an evening with a pessimist? Are you inspired or depressed after watching the news? In contrast, how do you feel when you see or do something you love - say going to a favorite concert or joining in to help with a pet project? How does your favorite photo make you feel? The things around us, the things we expose ourselves to every day, affect our mind, and our mind affects our body. Once you have learned how to harness the power of all that, you'll have unbounded power to shape the rest of your life.
The nutrisystem diet will help you cultivate the life you desire. To do it, you must nourish both your body and mind well by allowing the process to unfold and to reinvent yourself, reshaping your experience of life. Your body will begin working for you, and by shaping up your mind, you'll start overcoming the mental obstacles that are inhibiting your weight loss. Just open yourself up to the idea and give yourself permission to nourish yourself without expectation.
In my first appointment with Dr. James, I asked him to just give me a diet and tell me how much weight I needed to lose. But as I tried to lose weight, something just was not coming together. I was feeling at odds with my commitment, and on a deeper level, I was truly struggling with my faith in myself to follow through on something that was just for me. I felt that I was experiencing my life in two separate places: one was the body trying to lose weight, eat better, move more; the other me was stuck in the “you cannot stay with this - who are you kidding?” mode. But as I worked on the daily practices that Dr. James outlined for me, I felt that for the first time in my life I could count on me - the whole me - to step up and take a stand to become a better, more whole person, and I'm now at my desired weight! - Tina, age 42
Charlie and Diane follow the Do-It-Yourself Meal Plan 100 percent for their weight-loss program. Charlie and Diane moved to Vermont two years ago, and while endeavoring to lose weight, they are thoroughly enjoying living healthy and fit in their retirement. It's Friday, and they awake slowly to enjoy some light vanilla yogurt and a Banana Chocolate Chip Muffin over coffee and the daily crossword puzzle. Once fully awake, they head out for a walk down their lane, taking turns doing their “mental floss” exercise out loud, dispelling some negative thoughts and sharing more positive ones together. By lunchtime, they're keeping their weekly volunteer date at the local hospital and stop by the cafeteria for a grilled chicken salad, some low-salt rye crackers, and a big glass of milk. Once home, it's almost 3 P.M., and they grab a handful of raisins and a slice of fat-free cheese while working through some bills and receipts. For dinner, Tilapia with Honey Mustard Sauce is on the menu, and Diane fits in a few “Metabolic Minutes” - doing a few sets of arm curls with a can of soup - while waiting for the fish fillets to broil. After chatting on the phone with the grandkids after supper, they both relax with a piece of homemade Creamy Baked Cheesecake with Blueberry Topping while watching Law & Order on TV. It's been another great day on the nutrisystem diet for Charlie and Diane.
Becoming who you want to be involves creating a positive, healthy relationship with your body and mind. We're drawn to that and to people who have achieved that. Over the years, I've identified five basic things people do with their mindset to foster this healthy relationship.Doing these things can help you focus your mind and get your attitude in gear. You need to:
1. Prioritize yourself.
2. Examine your beliefs.
3. Use your “mental floss.”
4. Create a positive mindset.
5. Set new goals.
Once you provide yourself with concrete food for thought, you will notice how your hunger, needs, and desires begin to shift. Think about it: How often do you make your way to the kitchen to satisfy your latest desire when you are really hungering for something deeper? How often do you search outside of yourself for solutions to challenges in your life? By balancing your mind, you'll gain new perspective and begin to nourish your entire life from the inside out. If you can restructure your mindset, you can start to see new and different ways of living and being.
