Playing games and watching movies on your MacBook

Play games on your MacBook

While PCs have long held the position of best computers for serious gamers, the MacBook still comes with some great hardware and accessories for gaming. You shouldn’t have any trouble playing today’s hottest and most graphics-intensive games, especially if you have the more robust MacBook Pro model.

The only real game that is included on your MacBook is Chess. You can play against the computer or against another player. You can change the difficulty and even use voice commands to play. Launch Chess from the Applications folder or by clicking its icon on the Dock.

Another way to get some simple gaming time in on your MacBook is through Widgets. There’s even a little tile-swapping “game” included in your preinstalled Widgets (called Tile Game). There are many types of games available, from action games to word games, many of which are available for free.

If you are serious about gaming, you will want to purchase and install your own games. Before purchasing a game for your MacBook, you should check the system requirements and make sure that you meet or, better yet, exceed the recommended resources.

Watch movies on your MacBook

There are a couple of ways to get a great cinematic experience on your MacBook. It already has everything you need to play movies in most of today’s popular formats. You can download movies, stream them online, or play them from a DVD.

Get to know QuickTime Player

QuickTime is one of the best multimedia players on the market today and, best of all, it’s free. It’s already loaded onto your MacBook with Mac OS X and is located in the Applications folder. With the QuickTime program, you can view video files, record audio and video, and watch movies on the Web.

Watch video files in QuickTime

If you want to view a video clip or movie file in QuickTime, all you really need to do is double-click the file and, assuming it’s in a format that QuickTime recognizes, it will open and begin to play. If you prefer, you can open QuickTime and then go to File > Open and browse your computer for the file.

Use the controls at the bottom of the screen to stop, pause, fast forward, or rewind the video. You can also adjust the volume with the slider on the left side of the screen. The tracking bar at the bottom shows how long the clip is and how much time remains. You can choose a screen size from the View menu or resize the window with the sizing handle.
