Yesterday Latin-American performer and recording artist Ricky Martin confirmed his homosexuality in a personal interview and on his web sight. Martin stated "he was a fortunate homosexual man." Ricky Martin was born December 24,1971. He gained his first recognition as a singer in the Latin boy band Menudo. His solo artist success became popular in 1999 when he crossed over into English pop with the hit Livin' la Vida Loca. Ricky grew up in San Juan Puerto Rico. His parents divorced when Ricky was two. He grew up in a Catholic home and attended the Catholic church. He was an alter boy right up until he became a member of the band Menudo. After high school Martin moved to New York and later Cancun pursuing an acting career.
At that time he denied the rumor that tabloids are just making a living and people that have no life just creating a stir about his lifestyle. Recently one of Ricky's close friends slipped a comment to a gay swedish magazine that Ricky Martin is gay. Martin has been married for numerous years and fathered two children via surrogate in 2008. Seen often times in the public eye and photographed with many women, Martin has been voted as one of the most beautiful 50 people in the world.
Martin had kept his secret as he feared it would ruin his career. Martin was recently writing his memoirs and decided it was time to come out. Being a father of two sons made Ricky realize that he couldn't keep it a secret. Furthermore, in writing his book Martin realized how much he had kept locked inside and that the book was the tool to help him to release what he had kept inside.
Writing this book helped Martin to accept it was time to let the truth be known and stop being seduced by the insecurity and fear of the public knowing who he is. Ricky had feared that in earlier years the confession would affect his popularity as a recording artist. Other artist such as Elton John kept their sexual preference hush for most of their career. At that time lesbian-gay relationships were not so readily accepted as today. Rumor has been that Ricky's gay Puerto Rican boyfriend was tired of living the lie and threatened to expose their secret if Ricky Martin didn't come forward and announce his sexuality.
Martin reflects that his time is now and because of his growth he is a stronger person now to conquer his emotions. Acceptance has to come from within first, and now Ricky is in a stronger place emotionally to deal with the response of fans and critic regardless of their feelings of his sexual preference.
