Located in southwest Virginia, the Crooked Road is more than simply a driving route. This 200-mile heritage music trail winds through Appalachia and connects music venues and heritage sites that highlight the standard music of the region - the gospel, bluegrass and mountain music which has been passed on for generations by local families.
On the way, you will find stage shows, outdoor concerts, festivals, Appalachian crafts, galleries plus some great scenery; however it is the locals who bring the Crooked Route to life. Whether it is the banjo maker in Galax or even the quilter in Floyd, every one has a tale to inform. And part of the whole Crooked Road experience is merely making the effort to pay attention.
Technically the Crooked Road is not only one road, but a route made up of many state routes and native roads. The very best starting place may be the eastern terminus, Rocky Point, that is located 25 miles south of Roanoke. Simply take VA 40 west toward Ferrum and stick to the Crooked Road signs. Besides this being the simplest entry way, but Ferrum constitutes a great first stop, because the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum provides a good overview on the regional heritage.
Located on the campus of Ferrum College, nowhere Ridge Institute and Museum features indoor gallery space with an outdoor heritage farm museum. The gallery space hosts exhibitions that highlight the folks and heritage of the region. There's level use of the museum, barrier-free access through the galleries and many accessible parking outside.
Next door, take a moment to appear with the Farm Museum, that has gravel and dirt pathways, ramps as much as the barns and some steps up in to the farmhouse. The pathways are doable for most of us in dry weather, and, while you can't access every display, you can still get a great feel for which Virginia farm life was like back in 1800.
Traveling west on the Crooked Road, you'll cross nowhere Ridge Parkway and enter Floyd County. Here's in which a little diversion is in order. Although it isn't on the official route, I recommend a minimum of a brief drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, as it is very scenic. In either case, an end in Floyd is essential, and, if you are searching for overnight accommodations, take a look at the Oak Haven Lodge.
Opened in 2003, this 10-room rustic lodge features ramp use of the leading porch and office, with accessible parking available in a gravel car park near the office. Room 1 is situated downstairs and it has wide doorways, two double beds, good pathway access along with a 5-foot turnaround in the bathroom.
Access features in the bathroom incorporate a low-step shower, a roll-under sink, grab bars in the shower and round the toilet along with a portable shower chair. A commode chair can also be available upon request. All of this can be obtained for any very aff ordable USD 65 per night.
