Safari vacation outside of San Francisco

Everything began having a quick white flash along with a slight movement in the bushes on my right. A couple of seconds later I had been in a position to make out a few amorphous shapes. Just like I had been going to query our guide, Sherry slammed on the brakes in our safari vehicle. Having a thunderous roar, a herd of animals discovered the street in front people and bounded in the adjacent hill. In a couple of seconds these were gone.

"Thompson's Gazelles," quipped Sherry "Aren't they beautiful?" Even though this can be a common sight in Africa, we weren't exactly in the wilds of the Dark Continent. In fact i was just an hour or so from Bay area, in a unique wildlife sanctuary that offers visitors an accessible and intimate taste of Africa.

The brainchild of Peter Lang, Safari West is really a wildlife sanctuary having a twist; additionally, it boasts an African-style tent camp. This 400-acre game preserve hosts a group of exotic pets and birds, many of which roam free within the gated compound. Visitors may take a safari tour or stay overnight in an extravagance tent cabin or both. It's similar to visiting Africa, except you do not get jet lag, it will save you about $3,000 and you can get it done in a weekend.

The 2.5-hour safari tour is carried out in an open-air vehicle. Half of the tour is really a driving tour and also the partner is really a ranger-led walking tour. The driving tour covers the gated compound, where Watusi cattle, Cape buff alo, gazelles, zebras, ostriches and oryxes roam free. Some animals approach the automobile; in fact, one ostrich by having an attitude took a peck at me. It's all regulated part of the unscripted wildlife experience.

The conventional tour isn't technically wheelchair accessible, while you must ascend several steps to transfer in to the back of the high safari vehicle. It's ideal for slow walkers since you do not have to get out of the vehicle until it returns. Alternatively, if you can transfer from your wheelchair and ascend one large step, you can sit in the front seat.

The walking part of the tour covers the enclosures close to the tent cabins, in the main area of the preserve. The entire distance covered is all about a town block, and golf carts are for sale to visitors who cannot walk the length. This part of the tour is great, because it features a consider the cheetahs and lemurs, some close-up giraffe interaction along with a stroll although the spectacular open-air aviary.
