You should try these steps if your MacBook doesn’t seem to be receiving any power and will not turn on, or if it does turn on but you experience display problems and/or do not hear any hard drive/fan activity:
If you are attempting to run your MacBook on battery power, you should check to see if the battery is charged. On MacBook and MacBook Pro models, there is a small button near the battery on the left side or bottom of your computer. Press it and green lights will appear to indicate your battery’s charge. If only one light appears, you need to charge the battery. If that doesn’t work, try running the computer on AC power.
If you have the MacBook model that includes a battery that you can remove and replace yourself, try removing the battery for several minutes. Reinsert the battery and then try to turn the computer on.
Disconnect any external devices, such as a display, printer, scanner, keyboard, mouse, and so on. If you are connecting to the Internet through a wired connection, disconnect that as well. Attempt to start your computer when everything has been removed.
Plug in another device to your wall outlet to make sure that it is receiving power. If you use a surge protector, make sure that the breaker has not been tripped and that it is active and receiving power. If it is, check that the prongs on your adapter are not damaged or dirty. Additionally, check your MagSafe port to ensure that it is clean and free of lint or other debris.
Do not use adapters that were not made for your computer’s make and model.
Press the ctrl-command keys and the power button simultaneously to attempt to restart the computer.
Press the power button and hold down all four of these keys: command-option-p-r. Continue to hold them until you hear your MacBook’s startup sound twice.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC), which regulates your power settings, including battery management. Resetting it could resolve some power issues. See the How To box for instructions on how to perform an SMC reset on the two MacBook models. If your MacBook won’t shut down, press and hold the power button for about ten Tip seconds. That should cause the computer to power down.
