The history of search engine optimisation

SEO writing

The term of SEO means "Search Engine Optimization". It appreared in 1990 and it is a branch of online marketing strategy. It is used to improve either the volume or the quality of traffic to a blog or a web site. SEO takes into consideration people`s interests and what are they searching for, whenever they use a search engine.

At the beginning, search engines used to show web surfers the results that they considered relevant based on the words found in the descriptions of the site. Because webmasters took too much advantage of this thing, search engines started developing more complex algorithms, thanks to the graduate students at Stanford University and others that imposed the well-known PageRank. This is used for estimating the likelihood for a given page to be relevant and how popular it is, along with the probability of being reached by a web surfer that searches randomly, following links from one page to another one.

The site owners began to recognise the value of high quality classification along with the visibility, creating terms that define both good and bad ways of promoting, these terms being  "White hat" or "Black hat". White hat includes the ones who use legal techniques to promote their sites or articles, based on optimization regarding their content and pages, so they will correctly be indexed and classified as relevant by the algorithms mentioned earlier, used by search engines.

The Black Hat SEO, known as "cloaking", is as you may think reffered to illegal methods of promoting a site. Although mostly webmasters are those who take advantage of these bad methods, there are the sites of well-known companies that used to do the same such as BMW or Ricoh. Among these cloaking techniques we find spam messages on sites with a great number of visitors such as MySpace or Youtube, spammers being either robots or humns that send messages in which they present in such a way certain sites that makes most of the readers be curios and click on sites that are very often malicious, therefore getting infected.

When indexing pages, the most known search engines often use the paid services of submission that sends "crawlers" to find pages for algorithmic search results. Therefore, those pages which are already linked to other search engines and are indexed don`t need to be checked again, being automatically found.

These web directory paid submission sites use human editorial review just to ensure that all pages are found, especially those that are not discoverable by automatically following links.

Although SEO can be seen as a marketing strategy, this is not necessarily an appropriate strategy and based on the site operator`s goals there can be lots of other internet marketing strategies that can turn out to be more useful and effective than this one. Due to the fact that every search engine change their algorithms from time to time, they must announce any marketing site that are their refferals with at least a few months before doing so, allowing them time to reorganize their contents. Otherwise, search engines can lose refferals.
