The iPad automatically joins a WiFi network

iPad and AT&T data network

When there is a Wi-Fi network within range, the iPad will automatically join it so you can have a speedier connection than what you get with the 3G network. When you're out of range, however, the iPad maintains its link towards the Internet with its 3G chip. When the iPad is using the cellular network, you see the AT&T signal bars in the upper-left corner from the screen. AT&T's cellular data network isn't all high speeds and roses, however. Depending on your location, the tablet's connection speed may drop. The icons in the top left corner let you know which network you're on:

Wi-Fi. You're connected to a Wi-Fi hot spot, most likely the fastest of all the connections, but this may vary by individual network - some overloaded coffee-shop or hotel networks can feel like dial-up.

3G. The second fastest in potential network options, the 3G can be obtained in most urban areas. This is what you're paying for with your monthly bill.

EDGE. The EDGE network is slower than 3G, but could handle most data transfers if you hold out long enough. The name, in case you had been wondering, stands for Enhanced Data rates for GSM (or Global) Evolution.

GPRS The slowest of all network options, the General Packet Radio Service network continues to be letting mobile phones send and receive data for a long time.

Even though your iPad may drop to turtle speed when you're out in the thinner coverage areas of AT&T's network, just remember: a trickle of information is still some data, and better than no data whatsoever.

Turn 3G Service off or on

Always through an Internet connection around is very convenient in today's data-munching world. You never have to worry about missing an essential email message or sudden news development.

But occasionally you want to turn off your 3G service, for example when you're getting perilously close to your 250 megabytes of monthly data and do not want to give AT&T any more money, or when you are traveling overseas and want to avoid monster charges for inadvertently roaming onto another network.

In times like these, tap Settings, then Cellular Data, then Cellular Data and Off. You can also turn off Data Roaming by tapping through Settings, then Cellular Data, then Data Roaming and then Off. And if you need to turn off all your iPad's wireless powers, choose Settings, then Airplane Mode and On. When it's safe to start surfing again, come back to these screens to show everything back on.
