Consider what would happen if you would renew your thinking to complement and support who you are today as well as where you want to go in the years ahead. What if you allowed all new, positive thoughts to guide and support you every day - how would that be? What if you nurtured a genuine belief in yourself? How would things change?
I tell my patients that your inner atmosphere creates your outer weather. Think about that for a moment. The things we contemplate on the inside are what become us on the outside. If you are holding thoughts that are critical, judgmental, and fault finding within yourself, then you can expect to get exactly the same from the world around you.
On the flip side, the beautiful and empowering truth is that if you envision thoughts that are open, loving, and accepting, that's what you will attract from the world around you. Your perspective casts either shadows or light. And while simply saying “I will lose weight and look beautiful” won't make the pounds melt away, if you make daily strides to become more positive and undertake a complete positive thinking initiative, you can change your life in ways you never imagined. It's a fact - each morning, you can influence your day right from the start. Do you wake up thinking “Good morning, God!” or do you wake up thinking “Good God, it's morning”? You can imagine which one of these statements sets the course for a more positive day. By just shifting words, you can creatively change your inner dialogue to transform your outer experience. One of the great challenges in learning to change your inner dialogue from conspiring to inspiring is finding a way to see your thoughts as nourishment. Those things running through your mind are not just empty thoughts without any effect. What you think and believe profoundly influences your life, and you alone have the power to change your frame of mind. You must listen to your inner coach.
When you're trying to lose weight, you can go through myriad emotions and much self-doubt. All too often the loudest voice within you belongs to your inner critic - the one who's always telling you what you're doing wrong and that you're never going to amount to anything. But what if you tuned in to your inner coach instead? Your coach is the part of you who is your true self; the you who is good, loving, and alive with purpose. Up until now, most of us have trained ourselves to listen to the critic, but now it's your coach's turn to speak.
It's time to create a new inner dialogue, a new conversation with yourself. Doing your daily mental flossing to remove negative thoughts will help this process and will help you begin connecting with your positive side. You need to develop a friendship with your heart. Begin listening to it every day. Take time out during your morning or afternoon to listen to the coach inside of you, and actively disregard that inner critic that's usually so loud.
It takes time to make this change and bring this nurturing voice out. But the beauty and the power of befriending your inner coach is that its power and positive influence surpass just supporting your weight-loss goals. Just think of all the places you could apply its loving support to your life! By listening to your inner coach instead of your critic, you'll care for yourself well. You'll find appreciation for yourself and for your new way of life. You'll find renewed strength.
I fear you may be thinking that it's going to take all the willpower you can muster to keep the bad thoughts away and create a new way of thinking. But actually willpower has nothing to do with it. Let's delete the word willpower from our vocabulary. Let's replace it with willingness. As you look toward nourishing both your body and mind with healthy foods and attitudes, you need to understand that you're not fighting something but are instead creating it. When you move toward building a positive mindset, it isn't about what you won't do but about what you will do.
Are you willing to nourish yourself with healthy foods on a daily basis? Are you willing to make movement and exercise consistent entities in your life? When the entire focus of a program is based solely on a very limited goal such as fighting weight or losing inches, you may feel limited - it's you and the scale and how much willpower you have. Your sense of accomplishment and success rests on a rather arbitrary number and it's usually a setup for losing more faith than pounds.
However, it's different with the nutrisystem diet. You're asked to be willing - willing to try new foods; willing to experiment with movement and exercise; willing to ask a friend to join you on the weight loss diet. Are you willing to go out to dinner and order low-glycemic, healthy portions while your friends or family members order fattening fried foods? Are you willing to prepare your own version of dinner while the rest of the family eats a pizza? Are you willing to rediscover the real you? It's all about being open to what is possible. Okay, then . . . if you're willing, then we can begin setting some new goals!
Methods and techniques for how to surround yourself with people, objects, and experiences that aid and encourage positive change are key to weight-loss success. This exercise is exciting and enlightening. Simply make an assessment and write down the areas and places in your life where you tend to spend a lot of time. Notice what is good and less than good about these areas. For instance, if you spend a lot of time in your car, ask yourself if what you listen to while you're in it inspires you and adds positivity to your life? If not, what could you be listening to that would bring forth more inspiration? How about placing pictures, quotes, and whatever else brings you joy in the areas where you spend time, like the kitchen or your office workspace? Surround yourself with positive mental triggers. If you can see it, you can be it!
