The Twitter question that typically arises is whether or not it's important - as well as necessary - to become mutual follower of those who follow you. Certainly, the essence of being "social" involves reciprocity: I'll smile at you, but are you going to smile at me? Put more bluntly, many people look at being sociable towards the extent of "what's in it for me." Indeed, we always wish to receive a return on our investment, be it personal or professional in nature.
In the arena of sales, for example, salespeople are constantly hunting for a good lead or potential deal and will pour effort out quickly to achieve a sale. If the lead or customer seems noncommittal or otherwise unwilling to reciprocate, the salesperson will redirect his focus on another possible customer. Although it sounds rather callous, businesses stay afloat not by wasting time on people who really haven't the intention or capability to close a deal, and the same holds true when it comes to networking using social networking.
With Twitter, then, a business should seek followers that will give you value - by means of revenue, interest, or access - to its main point here. That said, is it necessary that a business become a follower to those who abide by it? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Yes, you should become a follower of those who follow you in these situations:
As you can see, reciprocity isn't entirely based on how much money a particular follower might contribute to your bottom line; judging your followers as a result would be wrong and antithetical to the spirit of Twitter.
Rather, if you find that you would characterize one of your followers by the foregoing attributes, especially to the point that they've successfully and genuinely engaged you, then clearly you need to become one of their followers. That's what a healthy society is all about, right? Conversely, you will find those other times when it's not necessary that you become a follower of those who follow you. For instance:
I have listed a few ideas of why or why not to follow someone that follows you. Like any social setting, your tastes as well as friendships can and will change with time. Some followers will make you, new followers will find you, and yet, through it all, you will certainly discover how to follow others in a way that builds a lasting engagement. The mutual follow isn't necessary, but it's a good thing to nurture when you find the right match.
