If you’ve been using your Windows 7 computer for a while, perhaps downloading music from the Internet or sharing music with friends, you may have music files scattered in various places throughout your hard drive. Of course, the point of the Media Library is to give you one place where you can go to access and organize all the music you have on your computer. In this task, you’ll find out how you can tell Windows Media Player to search your hard drive (or parts of it) to locate music files and add them to the Media Library.
1. If Windows Media Player isn’t already running, select Start > All Programs > Windows Media Player.
2. Click Media Library on the taskbar on the left edge of the window.
3. Select Tools > Search For Media Files (or hit the F3 key). The Add to Media Library by Searching Computer window appears.
4. Use the Search option drop-down list box to choose where you’d like to search. Use the Look in Text Box with the Browse Button option to specify a folder where the search should begin. Click to select the New Files Only radio button.
5. Click Search. The progress window shows how far along the search is.
6. Click Close on the status window when the search is complete.
7. Click All Audio in the list at the left of the window. Scroll down your list on the right, and look for newly added items. Double-click to listen to them.
Some people love music for the music and couldn’t care less about the lyrics. Others have to be able to understand every line or they can’t enjoy the song. For those of you who are more lyrically oriented, Windows 7 makes it possible for you to keep a song’s lyrics with the song. You find out how to add lyrics to a song and then how to view the lyrics when the song is played.
1. If Windows Media Player isn’t already running, select Start > All Programs > Windows Media Player.
2. Click Media Library on the taskbar on the left edge of the window.
3. In the list on the left, double-click All Music and then on Artist, Album, or Genre to locate the song you want to add lyrics to. When you locate the song, double-click to play it.
4. Click Now Playing on the taskbar on the left edge of the window.
5. Along the top of the window there are a series of links: Home, Artist Info, Album Info, Lyrics, Related Music, and Tag Info. Click Lyrics.
6. Click Add Lyrics. A text box appears where you can type lyrics for the song.
7. Locate the lyrics to the song and type them in. Hit Enter when you want to go to a new line.
8. Click Save Lyrics when you are finished.
You can use playlists to create a collection of songs from a variety of different albums. When you create a playlist, you identify exactly what songs should be in it and what order they should play in. For example, you could create a mellow playlist that contains all your favorite relaxing tunes. Or you could create a bestof playlist for your favorite band. In this task you’ll find out how to create a playlist, add songs to it, re-order the songs, and then play it whenever you like.
1. If Windows Media Player isn’t already running, select Start > All Programs > Windows Media Player.
2. Click Media Library on the taskbar on the left edge of the window.
3. Click the Playlists button in the upper-left corner of the window. A menu appears. Select New Playlist. The New Playlist window appears.
4. Type the name of the playlist you’d like to create in the Playlist Name text box.
5. Select an option in the View Media Library By drop-down list box. You can view by artist, by album, by genre, or virtually any combination. After you select an option, the appropriate list appears in the list box below.
6. Use the list box on the left to locate songs that you want to add to the playlist. Click on a song to add it to the playlist — the list box on the right shows the playlist songs.
7. To delete a song from the playlist, click the song in the list box on the right and then click Delete (the button at the bottom with the big red X).
8. To change the order of the songs in the playlist, click to select a song in the list box on the right and then use the Up and Down buttons (the arrows at the bottom of the window) to change that song’s position.

10. To play a playlist, simply double-click on its icon.
