What benefits to expect from meditation

Meditation

Most of us have heard that "prayer is talking to God; meditation is listening." Personally I need to do a lot of listening, and I think most people feel the same way. I need to listen so that I can find the space that comes from my deepest sense of self. If you're raging about your life, you're not listening.

If you are obsessing, you're not listening. If you're shopping, you're not listening. Meditation gives you an opportunity to stop and listen to what you need to hear so that you can lead your life in a way that makes you feel happy, healthy, and full.

Meditation is a healing ritual in itself, and a daily dose is an important practice during your days of fasting. Meditation stills the mind and calms the body. When you meditate, you are taking time out from preoccupations, worries, distractions, demands, and other pressures, and creating a quiet space where you can find peace, groundedness, energy, aliveness, and, most important, new answers.

In that very special place of quiet, many people make their first connection to a true feeling of spirituality, or reconnect to past spiritual experiences that somehow got lost.

Use Meditation to Get Answers

The two questions I always ask myself are: "What did I come here to learn?" "What did I come here to teach?" These are my questions. Perhaps they're also your questions. Or maybe you have different questions that you want answered for yourself, questions such as: "Should I take this job?" "Should I stay in this relationship?" "Should I have a child?" "Should I move to Colorado?" If you are ready for answers, meditation is the healthiest place to turn for those answers.

Where do your answers come from? Some people feel that the answers to their questions come directly from God. Others feel that they are helped by angels or archangels. Some people believe that they are guided by spirits. Many people pooh-pooh divine intervention. After all, God may be too busy at the moment to attend to every one of your immediate issues. These men and women feel that their answers come directly from their own centers - the wisdom we all carry within ourselves. Whatever you believe or think, I want to assure you that meditation will help you get answers to your questions.

The meditations will soothe you, support you, and honor your intention every day of your fasting journey. In addition to preparing you for the day, your guided morning meditation will help you feel relaxed, clear, and cheerful. Over the course of three days, fasting can stir anxiety and stress. A daily ritual of meditation can be one of your most powerful allies, helping you put down any internal rebellions that attempt to disrupt your fast.

The first time I meditated, I expected to have a movie go off in my head; I waited for pictures and sounds. Instead it was complete silence, which is just what I needed. I thought I fell asleep. Some people do fall asleep, and that's perfectly okay. It means your body needs the rest. The most important thing is to keep trying. Reaching nirvana is not the goal here. The only goal is to make it a daily practice - eighteen to twenty minutes a day is ideal.
