Who needs breast cosmetic surgery and why is it performed

Why is breast cosmetic surgery performed?

Breast cosmetic surgery is performed for a number of reasons, not simply because a woman either needs or wants breast cosmetic surgery. Breast cosmetic surgery is performed because it is:

• Recommended or prescribed as the course of treatment for disease

• Recommended, prescribed, or elected to prevent disease

• Recommended or prescribed to improve a woman’s physical condition and quality of life

• Desired to improve a woman’s physical condition and quality of life

• Desired to bring proportion to a woman’s figure

• Desired to restore changes in a woman’s figure

• Desired to enhance personal appearance

In every case, breast cosmetic surgery has theoretical alternatives. A woman can reject mastectomy or any form of tissue removal to treat disease despite paramount detriment to her health. Or, less aggressive forms of treatment combinations may be appropriate substitutes, such as lumpectomy with radiation or skin sparring mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. To further the alternatives, a woman can reject reconstruction altogether and wear a prosthesis, or she may even choose not to hide her condition. A small-breasted woman may wear padded bras rather than undergo augmentation. A large-breasted woman may hide behind baggy clothing and minimizing bras to de-emphasize overly large breasts. Another woman may choose to wear a bra around the clock, and never appear unclothed even to her partner or spouse to hide deeply sagging, flat breasts. She may exercise herself to exhaustion, believing that fitness relates to the condition of her breasts.

Or, a woman may purchase creams, herbal supplements, and devices with the promise of improving her breast condition. But none of these alternatives has the same proven result as breast cosmetic surgery, in any case, prescribed or elective. The proof is in the continued evolution of techniques in procedures for breast cosmetic surgery, and in the satisfaction of women who have undergone breast cosmetic surgery to save or change their lives. I was always an active, athletic woman. No frills about my body; I just wanted a healthy body. I wondered why some women focused so much on their bodies, and their breasts. But the day I learned I had breast cancer, and learned that I would lose my breast, my thinking of why women were so focused on their breasts changed quickly to, “why do I have to lose mine?”

Who has breast cosmetic surgery?

Women of all ages, all races, all income, and all education levels have breast cosmetic surgery. There is no one factor that defines all breast cosmetic surgery patients. In fact, women are not the only breast cosmetic surgery patients; men can undergo breast surgery, too. Women who choose to undergo breast augmentation (the surgical placement of implants to enhance breast size and shape) are not only people seen in the media. In fact, most women who choose augmentation are restoring breast volume lost after pregnancy and breast-feeding. Likewise are women who elect surgery to reduce the size of overly large breasts. Most women with overly large breasts are not, in fact, obese or generally even overweight. Breast size is largely determined by heredity. So too, is how a woman’s breast ages determined by heredity, not fitness. A very active and fit woman with poor skin elasticity can find that, over time, her breasts point downward and no longer outward. Women who undergo breast cosmetic surgery to treat disease are not all post-menopausal, or women who lack a healthy lifestyle. They are of every age and some are the picture of fitness and health. They are not all severely disfigured or debilitated by surgery or by the effects of disease and prescribed treatment. More often these women lead happy lives and have a positive outlook. They do not hide their condition; they share their experiences and support one another.

Women who choose to reconstruct a breast lost or disfigured to breast disease are not ungrateful for their cure, but are largely grateful for the opportunity to feel whole and optimistic about leading a normal life. Men who undergo breast cosmetic surgery are those who are diagnosed with breast disease or who elect to have surgery. Elective breast cosmetic surgery for men is most commonly to correct a condition called gynecomastia (which is the excessive growth of male mammary glands) using a type of surgery that achieves a more masculine appearance to an enlarged male breast. While the issue of breast cosmetic surgery for men is an important one, it deserves a focus of its own, because much of women’s health and men’s health issues differ so greatly. This article is not written for or about the women who have had breast cosmetic surgery. Rather, it is written for any woman who is curious about, desires, or has been recommended to undergo breast surgery of any kind. It is also for the people who love, support, and believe in her.
