Make sure that you are connected to the Internet and then open Safari by double-clicking the icon in the Applications folder or by clicking the icon in the Dock. This will launch your browser, which should open to the Top Sites page by default during your first use. One of your Top Sites will be the Apple home page. Take some time to explore the website if you haven't visited it before. There's a lot of great information available!
As with other programs, you can use the scroll bar to move the screen's contents up and down, such as when you want to move through lengthy web pages. Occasionally, you will notice that your mouse pointer turns into a hand. This means that the text or image that you are currently centered on contains a link to a website.
You can click the active item to go to that site. In the upper-left corner, you will see two arrows. Clicking the left-pointing arrow will move you back to the website that you were on previously, and clicking the other arrow will move you forward to the website that you went back from.
If you want to make your Safari window larger or smaller, click the resize handle in the lower-right corner of the window. Drag by clicking and holding the icon and moving your mouse until the window is the size you want. After resizing a Safari window, any new windows that you open will be the new size.
When you want to move to a new site, you can type the address into the address bar at the top of the screen or click a link from a page that you are currently on. Safari and other browsers now include "smart" address bars. As you type in a website address, your browser will suggest complete addresses that you can select to jump to that site.
It will suggest sites from previously typed entries and from top sites on the Internet if they match what you are typing. Back in the day, you had to type in every character of web address, including the http://, before you could navigate to a site. Now, in some instances, you can just type in a single word and the browser will fill in the rest.
Your web browser keeps a history of all the websites that you visit. Safari uses this information to update your Top Sites, both to auto-complete web addresses and so that these websites will load more quickly when you visit them again. On the flip side, someone else can come along and see exactly what websites you've visited, which might not be a good idea if you were shopping online for a birthday gift or surprise anniversary vacation. To keep your browsing activities under wraps, click History > Clear History at any time to manually remove your browsing history, or change the preferences in your browser so that your history is erased at regular intervals.
Safari 4 tracks the sites that you visit and ranks them according to how often you do so. It presents the websites you visit most often in the Top Sites view, with up to 24 thumbnail images of the websites per page. You can pin favorite sites to specific locations on the page - so that you know just where to look next time you open Safari - by clicking the pushpin icon of the site you want to pin.
Arrange your Top Sites by dragging the web pages to where you want them to be on the page. Click the X in the corner of a site to remove it from your Top Sites. Websites with a star icon in the upper-right corner have updated their content since your last visit. To access your Top Sites page, click the Top Sites button in the Bookmarks Bar.
