Start by sitting cross-legged on the floor, or in a comfortable chair within your sacred space. Extend your right arm fully in front of you and point your index finger. Now, using your index finger as though it were a pencil, draw an extended imaginary circle completely around yourself. Be sure to complete the circle so it is protecting you on all sides.
Now, close your eyes and think for a moment. What have you brought into this circle today that is a source of stress, anger, frustration, worry, concern, sadness, or fear? Did you bring your monthly mortgage and credit card bills? Did you bring a memory of last night's bad date? Did you bring the list of things you need to do this week, the disagreement you just had with your sister, or the problems you're having with your child's elementary school teacher?
One by one I want you to take each of these things in your hand, as though you could actually pick them up, and place them outside of the circle. It is important to symbolically remove every item with a concrete physical gesture. If it is your boss, for example, imagine a tiny replica of this person right in front of you - pick him/her up and place him/her outside of the circle.
Use your strength to push and keep each item outside of the circle. If they insist on hanging around the perimeter for now, that's okay, as long as they don't come inside.
To make your space truly sacred, it must be dedicated to you and you alone. Others may be invited to join you in spirit, but that decision is only yours to make. Right now I want you to think about all of the positive people in your life who, in your thoughts, you have carried with you into your sacred space.
One by one, you need to imagine gently picking them up in your hands and carrying them to the outside edge of your circle. They can stay nearby, they just need to remain outside your personal boundary.
In a few moments you will be inviting some of these people back in, but right now, it is important to hold on to the feeling of being absolutely alone in a space that is dedicated entirely to you. Once the only person you are thinking about within your space is YOU, and you have fully felt this separateness, you have sanctified your space.
