Get Ready for the Upcoming Cooling Season

Now that spring is finally here, it’s time to prepare your heating and cooling system for some warmer weather. While this does involve contacting a St Charles heating and cooling company to take a look at your HVAC system, there are still some things that you can do to get ready for the upcoming cooling season.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

If you haven’t done so already, you should, by all means, buy a programmable thermostat for your HVAC system. This will allow you to determine when your air conditioner will be turned up during the day and when it can be safely turned down. Since you will probably be spending more time out of your home once the weather gets warmer, this will be a good way to keep your utility bills down to a manageable level.

Clean Off Your Outdoor Coils

If you live in a house with central air, you no doubt have an outdoor air conditioning unit. Since this unit has spent the entire fall and winter exposed to the elements, the coils that are responsible for cooling the air that passes through them and into your home are full of dirt and debris. Take some time to clean off these coils if you want your air conditioner to be at its most efficient.

Change Your Air Filters

While you should be changing your HVAC system’s filters every month, it’s a bit of maintenance that is easy for most homeowners to overlook. Since you’re going to be looking over your HVAC system anyway, why not take the time to switch out your filter if you haven’t done so for the month? Even if you don’t stay on top of your furnace filters and let them sit for months at a time, simply changing them this one time before the summer will greatly improve the function of your HVAC system.
